Notes on Quantitative Methods Using the Graphing Calculator for Poisson Distribution

On the 83 (see 86 below) (see me for TI-89 statistics software)

press 2nd DIST and select Poissonpdf(     Note: Do not use ....cdf

Poissonpdf(mean,X)

Example: Poissonpdf(4,5) yields .1563 when the average arrivals per hour is 4 and you want the probability of 5 arrivals in 1 hour.

On the 86 (The statistics software must be loaded on your calculator - see me)

press 2nd MATH MORE STAT then DIST MORE MORE and select pspdf(     Note: Do not use ....cdf

pspdf(mean,X)

Example: pspdf(4,5) yields .1563 when the average arrivals per hour is 4 and you want the probability of 5 arrivals in 1 hour.

Also see calculator_poisson_probabilities

Besides the built-in functions and other TI supplied software, I have written software packages for the 83 and 86 to do the Poisson and other statistical functions.  It's free for the asking
